Thanksgiving week is here. 💕 Despite knowing our holiday celebration will be low-key this year, I’m excited about the upcoming four-day weekend with K and Scooter. There is the promise of cooking once and eating leftovers for days, sleeping in after watching holiday movies (with popcorn) late into the evening, and wrapping up some of the organizing projects that we’ve started.

I’m fascinated by habit formation and behavior change, and I’ve just started reading Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg, PhD. Fogg makes a convincing case in the early part of the book (I’m not even 50 pages in) that behavior equals motivation plus ability plus a prompt, and that to focus on motivation alone as the reason why we have success or failure when working to create behavior change is missing part of the equation.

I’ve been thinking about how we as humans tend to take many things for granted, until a (sometimes shocking) change causes us to adjust our view. Maybe you are 87 and you can’t remember various facts anymore, so your kids take away your car keys to prevent you from getting lost on your way to the store. Maybe you are 46 and you injure your leg, so you have to use crutches and running is impossible until you heal. Maybe you are 19 and set to study abroad when a pandemic occurs, so you cannot travel without risking your safety or potentially losing your ability to travel back home.

Avocados are one of my favorite fruits. For the past few months, I have been making a lot of guacamole. Lately, I’ve been getting better and better at telling when my avocados are ripe. Despite making more guacamole in the past few months than I ever thought I would in such a short time, I still make mistakes and cut into one every so often when it’s not yet ripe. I’ve also missed the prime moment of ripeness and cut into many (many!) avocados that are starting to go bad or are not salvageable. At. All. (Yuck.)

As I was looking over my calendar for 2020 this past weekend, I thought about how we (humans) sometimes use arbitrary dates for setting goals. Though I love the promise of a blank calendar at the beginning of a year, I am not (usually) one to delay starting a new goal until a new month or year begins.

I go through phases where I’m very much into one activity or another. With a few exceptions, most things capture my interest for at least a little while. From a summer of Zumba classes to five months of boxing lessons to two years of swimming lessons, usually my interest in an activity also wanes when the schedule becomes inconvenient or the friend that I was going to classes with isn’t able to attend consistently.
