Set a Timer and Go

by Erica McClurkin in Exercise, Three Tips 0 comments tags: change, execution, fitness approach, getting started, movement, taking action
I hope you had an excellent weekend! As we pass the middle of July, I’m thinking about ways to spend more time outside. It seems like the summer disappears quickly once we hit August, so I’m putting off the indoor projects right now and soaking up the sunshine. (I’m pretty sure the laundry can wait…)

I hope that you feel you are making progress toward your fitness goals, you are enjoying the journey, and you’ve learned and applied at least one new approach as a result of reading my regular musings.

Training and Racing Insights

Despite many of the large May races being canceled or postponed, I was overjoyed to see so many in the running community complete smaller, local races this past weekend. Waking up at 5am yesterday to support our running group was a breeze for this night owl because the prize was seeing many of our runners run their race. (Race day is one of a few special reasons for getting up early with a smile on my face and a very happy heart.)

Steps for Getting Started

I’m starting to compile a list of resources for new computer users, and I thought that it might be interesting to take the same approach with thinking about exercise as a new activity for a person to consider. Though using technology didn’t look the same in the 1980s as it does today, my elementary school had computers in every classroom from at least second grade, from what I can remember.

Spring is almost here. Next weekend, we’ll spring ahead to adjust for Daylight Saving Time in Ohio, and the following Saturday will mark the equinox. I’m so excited! Warmer temps are coming! 🥰

Wellness in Winter, Part 2

by Erica McClurkin in Exercise, Goals, Self-Care 0 comments tags: execution, fitness approach, getting started, goal setting, habits, movement, ownership, stay on track, taking action
When it’s (below) freezing outside and the days are shorter, we all tend to slow down a bit. If you want to stay active during the winter months and find yourself struggling to exercise regularly, here are three tips to help keep you moving during wintertime:

One Step at a Time

So…how do you eat a watermelon? One bite at a time, right? (Given the season, maybe we should be talking about apple pie? Hmmmm…) And how do you walk or run a 5K? Yes — one step at a time.

Avocados and Exercise

by Erica McClurkin in Exercise, Goals 0 comments tags: being human, getting started, goal setting, guacamole, making mistakes, recipes, taking action
Avocados are one of my favorite fruits. For the past few months, I have been making a lot of guacamole. Lately, I’ve been getting better and better at telling when my avocados are ripe. Despite making more guacamole in the past few months than I ever thought I would in such a short time, I still make mistakes and cut into one every so often when it’s not yet ripe. I’ve also missed the prime moment of ripeness and cut into many (many!) avocados that are starting to go bad or are not salvageable. At. All. (Yuck.)

A Change in Pace

by Erica McClurkin in Exercise 0 comments tags: getting started, happy running place, running, slowing down
This morning, I had the honor of serving as the 11-minute-mile pace group leader for a 4-mile kick-off run.  Sometimes, it’s awesome to run fast and set a new record, but I have been taking it easy on the running front since my latest half marathon this past October.  A run here, a run there – just for fun and to spend time with friends.  In any case, I knew I’d be asking for trouble if I tried to pace the 9-minute-mile group, even though that’s pretty close to my regular running speed, so I asked for the 10 or 11 spot.   The course was hilly, and the morning was a little rainy.  No complaints here – it’s January in Cleveland, and at 48 degrees, it was beautiful running weather.
